FOLLOWING HIS STUNNING STRIKE AGAINST DONCASTER ROVERS IN THE WEEK, GEORGE MARIS ADMITS IT WAS AN EFFORT THAT CAUGHT EVEN HIM BY SURPRISE!
The U’s winger unleashed a ferocious 35 yard shot which struck the underside of the cross bar before crossing the goal line, and almost sparked a United comeback against the table toppers.
He said: “I can’t remember hitting many shots better than that one before! I actually didn’t know too much about it because I fell over almost as soon as I had hit it, so the fact it managed to beat the keeper and go in was as much a surprise to me as everybody else I guess.
“I didn’t have much else on and at that stage in the game I thought I may as well try the shot at goal. I saw it heading towards the top corner and luckily it went in.
“When I struck it and saw it briefly I knew it had a chance of hitting the net, but it was only when I heard the crowd cheer did I realise that I had scored.”
