Leon Legge becomes first U’s signing ahead of 2015/16 season.
Cambridge United have completed the signing of Leon Legge on a two-year deal, with the central defender becoming the club’s first addition ahead of the 2015/16 Sky Bet Football League season.
The 29-year joins the U’s from Gillingham FC after a two and half year spell at the Priestfield stadium.
As well as adding solidarity to the U’s defensive line, Legge brings a wealth of experience to the club having amassed over 280 career appearances.
Beginning his Football League career in 2009 with Brentford, Legge notched up 93 games for the Bees and earned a Johnstone Paint Trophy finalist medal having featured prominently for the side in their run to Wembley Stadium.
A loan move to Gillingham in 2013 was made permanent shortly after, where the defender went to secure a further 76 appearances and eight goals.
The two season spell in Kent also ensures the defensive stalwart arrives at the Abbey Stadium with first-hand experience of promotion from League Two in 2013, as the U’s set their sights on competing in the top of half of the same division next season.
Commenting on his signature at the club, a delighted Legge said, “I’m very pleased to be coming to Cambridge United.
“I had a good talk with both Richard [Money] and Jez [George] and we spoke in detail about where they wanted to take the club and where it is heading. The supporters and everything about the club appealed to me which is why this is the club I have chosen in the end.
“Cambridge was the one that felt right for me.
He continued, “I have had a little bit of experience in League Two before and won this division with Gillingham. Hopefully I can share that experience with other lads in the side, so we’ll be looking to push up high in the league and do great things here.
“I’m hoping that other clubs won’t see us coming because there won’t be as much pressure on us. We have to take it game by game and then after that 46 game mark you never know we could be right up there.
“To come down here at the start of the new season and see the current lads here as well as the new ones coming through the door will be a nice integration into the squad and hopefully we can get up and running.
“It is a new chapter for me in my career and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the lads and get going.”
