Cambridge United are dedicating this Saturday’s match against Bristol Rovers to The Diabetes Football Community (TDFC), a not-for-profit organisation breaking down barriers for those living with type 1 diabetes…
TDFC empowers players and fans alike, demonstrating that diabetes doesn’t have to prevent anyone from enjoying the beautiful game.
Before the match, both squads of players will warm-up in special warm-up t-shirts featuring visual representations of key diabetes management devices – including a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) and an insulin pump - to promote awareness of how individuals living with diabetes adapt to and succeed in sport.
Volunteers from The Diabetes Football Community will also be fundraising around the ground, so please keep an eye out and help out if you can.
Through the various community activations, football/futsal teams, events and workshops, TDFC supports people living with type 1 diabetes, as well as families impacted by the condition with a support network for parents and children.
Founded in 2017 by Chris Bright, a former semi-professional footballer and Wales Futsal international, TDFC offers a supportive network where individuals can share experiences, advice, and resources for managing diabetes in the context of sport. Living with type 1 diabetes since 1999, Chris turned his own journey into a platform to inspire and connect others facing similar challenges.
Chris Bright, founder of The Diabetes Football Community, said: "At TDFC, our mission is to show that diabetes doesn’t have to limit your opportunities in sport or in life. We’re honoured to partner with Cambridge United on this fantastic initiative, using football to inspire and educate. Today is not only about raising awareness but also celebrating the resilience and determination of the diabetes community."
Cambridge United CEO, Alex Tunbridge added: "We’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on the amazing work of The Diabetes Football Community and to stand with them in encouraging inclusivity within football. Sport has the power to unite people, and we are committed to ensuring that no player, fan, or aspiring athlete feels excluded because of a health condition like diabetes."
