Glenn McConnell has signed his first professional contract with Cambridge United…
The 17-year-old scholar caps off a superb season with the U18s where he scored 21 goals across all competitions and played a major part in the team’s run to the FA Youth Cup Quarter Final and Cambridgeshire FA Invitation Cup success.
McConnell becomes the latest Academy product to rise through the ranks – having started his Cambridge United journey at U9s – to sign a professional deal.
“It’s a dream come true,” McConnell said. “Everyone hopes to get a professional contract so to be offered one is a good achievement for me. It’s really nice to get the recognition.
“I am excited. The Club is taking really good steps and I am really looking forward to next season and beyond.”
Academy Manager Dom Knighton said, “We are really pleased to be in a positon to offer Glenn his first professional contract. Glenn has had a really positive first year of his scholarship which included him playing an integral part in the U18s FA Youth Cup run, exposure to training with the first team and finishing the season on a work experience loan with St Neots Town.
“As we continue to strive as an Academy to best prepare our young players to transition from youth team football to a first team environment, it is vital that our players are educated in understanding that there will be challenges and bumps in the road along their journey and therefore Glenn’s development plan needs to mirror this.
“We are confident that Glenn has the characteristics to take these challenges in his stride and will keep progressing under the tutelage of the staff.”
McConnell will join up with Mark Bonner and the first team squad when pre-season training gets underway on Thursday 23rd June.
