Cambridge United is delighted to announce that Liam O’Neil has agreed to sign a new one-year contract with the Club...
The Swavesey-born midfielder played a pivotal role in the U’s promotion from Sky Bet League Two and his new contract means he will enter a sixth season with his boyhood Club.
“I am delighted to get it over the line,” O’Neil, 27, said. “I am looking forward to next season and hopefully build on a really positive one this year. It still hasn’t really sunk in for me to be honest but we are all buzzing to play in the league above next year and to have fans and an atmosphere back at the Abbey.”
Mark Bonner said, “I am pleased that Liam has extended his time with us by a further year because his influence on the team was very easy to see last season. He has played a vital role in a number of key results, contributing two crucial goals which will live long in the memory against Port Vale and Grimsby Town.
“He is a player with experience of playing League One football and that will help him and us adjust to the level in the season ahead. Liam will add good competition and cover to the team in the midfield area and will set standards throughout the team every day which will be the bedrock of any future success.
“He is another character who is completely committed and professional, and typifies our values. As I have alluded to with other players, these types of men are pivotal to our team and our environment.”
O’Neil joins Mitov, Taylor and Dunk to become the fourth U’s promotion-winning player to sign a new contract with the Club.
