The Ethos Community Hero of the day for the U’s Sky Bet League Two match against Yeovil Town is none other than former U’s goalkeeper, Rodney Slack.
In partnership with Cambridge United's Official Match Ball and Website sponsors Ethos, each match day this season will see an individual rewarded for their contribution to sport in the community as the Hero of the Day.
As well as featuring in the match day programme and on the Club's online channels, the Ethos Community Hero of the Day will also be given the opportunity to present the official match ball to the referee ahead of kick off.
This weekend’s Ethos Community Hero of the day is a very well-known name to U's fans, in the form of Rodney Slack.
As well as his playing contribution to the club between 1962 and 1970, Rodney receives this afternoon's award for his work chairing the Cambridge United Former Players' Association, managed by himself and the volunteers of the Coconuts committee.
CUFPA aims to unite former players, managers and coaches of Cambridge United and provide a means for them to:
Communicate through the media of a newsletter and the CUFPA website - www.cufpa.org.uk
Share memories
Attend small social events
In other words, CUFPA aims to bring the U's extended family closer together.
CUFPA alongside Coconuts has also worked with the Cambridge United Community Trust on the "United by Memories" Dementia Café project, held on the third Wednesday of every month for people living with dementia and their care partners. The sessions include activities, looking at sports images and memorabilia to aid recall and memory and chatting over tea/coffee.
Rodney has played a key role in all of the above, and we are absolutely thrilled he joins us this Saturday to present the match ball to our match referee. Please give him a warm welcome when he takes to the field prior to kick off.
