First half goals from Uche Ikpeazu and George Maris saw off Yeovil Town 2-1, as United comfortably beat the Glovers despite a tight ending to the Sky Bet League Two encounter.
Shaun Derry elected to return to the favoured diamond formation on home soil, with Jevani Brown, Leon Legge and goal scorer Maris, who proved to be the pick of the bunch on the night, returning to the starting line-up.
David Forde produced a remarkable double save inside a minute to ensure the game remained scoreless as Yeovil shot out of the blocks.
However, it was United who broke deadlock on 18 minutes when Jevani Brown’s perfectly weighted pass found its way into the path of Ikpeazu who rounded Glover’s keeper Artur Krysiak and tapped in from close range to register his seventh of the season.
The goal gave the U’s total dominance in the match and the lead was inevitably doubled soon after as Maris headed past Krysiak from the middle of the Yeovil area, as a result of an excellently delivered cross by Brad Halliday to secure a deserved two goal advantage at the break.
Shaun Derry’s men continued to control proceedings after half time and were close to a third when Maris bent a shot fractions wide of the goal on the hour mark.
However, Darren Way’s side found an unlikely goal on 61 minutes when Bevis Mugabi rose highest to head past Forde and peg the deficit back to one goal.
Maris continued to be a thorn in Yeovil’s side and struck the outside of the near post when he again found himself on the end of a right footed Mingoia cross.
Jevani Brown shaved the top of Krysiak’s goal with a fierce curling effort that was inches away from putting the game out of sight. However, Jabo Ibehre was required at the other end of the field to block a late strike off the line and seal the deal for the U’s.
