GREG ABBOTT MESSAGE ON CAMBRIDGE UNITED DEPARTURE
Former Head of Recruitment Greg Abbott saddened to leave Cambridge United after switching to Bradford City. The U's announced on Tuesday that Abbott had left the club to re-join the Bantams, a club close to his heart having spent a large period of his playing career at Valley Parade, alongside current first team manager Stuart McCall.
Commenting on his departure from the Cambs Glass Stadium, Greg said: "It is difficult to leave Cambridge United as it has been a genuine privilege to work with Jez (George, CEO) over the past three months. My relationship with Shaun (Derry, Manager) has been strong and will continue to be for many years I hope.
"Without the co-operation of both Jez and Shaun, this move to Bradford would not have been possible so I have to thank them. It is an adventure that is close to my heart, I spent nine and a half years as a player at Bradford alongside Stuart (McCall, Bradford City Manager) in midfield.
"All my family still live in the area and we have a house not too far from Bradford, so it was just the right move for me both emotionally and logically."
He continued: "Although I am excited about the challenge ahead, I am grateful to Cambridge United because it's a fantastic club with great people taking it in the right direction.
"I would like to go on record and thank all the first team staff also, Joe Dunne, Marc Tracy, Matt Walker, Martin Davies and Nick Irwin, who are a great set of people.
"When you get a situation like at Cambridge, where you respect the people you work with and they respect you, it is difficult to leave and I was genuinely enjoying my time at the club."
“It's a big wrench because there are some great people here but they're going in the right direction and they've got the right types of players who really want to be at Cambridge."
