SNEAK PREVIEW:
Last Saturday’s clash against Hartlepool United, marked the first time that Newton featured in consecutive fixtures for the full ninety minute period since joining the club in July.
Delighted to have been offered an opportunity to play regularly in the side over the last two weeks, Newton explains that he’s keen to repay the trust in his abilities from Manager Richard Money by working as hard as possible to tie down the spot more permanently.
“I am really pleased to have played 180 minutes in the last two games. With the way that the matches come at you thick and fast, to get two full games under my belt has helped with match fitness.
“We have three fixtures in quick succession next week, so that opportunity to get those minutes will prove to be really important, because game time is the ideal preparation.
He continued: “When you join a new club, to put in the performances that you want as a player, you would love to be playing as consistently as possible. Being in and out of the squad is never going to be good for you.
“I’m keen to back up the trust that the Gaffer [Richard Money] has shown in me and the performances over the coming weeks will be crucial to stake a claim for a spot, because with such a strong squad here this season places will be hard to come by.
Discussing his short term targets, Newton admits a more successful goal scoring ratio is high on his agenda and feels that with many of the games being as close on the score board as they have this season, his contribution in front of the target could have a significant impact for United.
“If I’m looking at targets in my game then obviously picking up a few more goals is high on the priorities list,” he said.
“I haven’t managed to get any yet this season and a lot of the games have been quite tight so to pop up with a goal here and there really could be the difference between securing one point or three when the final whistle is blown.”
Also in this week’s edition are columns for Chairman Dave Doggett and Manager Richard Money, an in-depth profile of tomorrow’s visitors Stevenage, 100 Years of Coconuts, Fan in Focus and updates from departments around the club.
And as always the usual fun games, quizzes and stats will all feature, so make sure you pick up a copy for just £3!
