MATCH PREVIEW: CAMBRIDGE UTD VS NOTTS COUNTY

MATCH PREVIEW: CAMBRIDGE UNITED VS NOTTS COUNTY

Cambridge United will go toe-to-toe with the oldest team in the Football League tomorrow afternoon for the first time in over a decade, as Notts County visit the Abbey Stadium (Kick off 3pm).

Manager Shaun Derry faces his former side, with the U’s looking to back up Tuesday night’s away win to Morecambe with another solid result to help propel them further up the Sky Bet League Two Table.

Despite a defeat last time out on home soil, an encouraging performance against high flyers Accrington Stanley may have whetted the appetite of the Amber Army, who will be hoping to see the U’s secure another win.

Meanwhile, the visiting Magpies’ season so far has taken a similar course to the U’s, with both sides looking to achieve a consistent run of results.

Notts County will be looking to bounce back to Sky Bet League One at the first attempt having been relegated last season. Ricardo Moniz’s men made a statement of intent in the summer bringing in proven goalscorer Izale McLeod for a six-figure fee to partner experienced front man Jon Stead.

The Midlands outfit possesses a good blend of youth and experience with the likes of Alan Smith and Mike Edwards also at the club to support their efforts for promotion.

Tomorrow’s encounter marks the first meeting between the teams since 7th May 2005, which ended in a goalless draw at the Abbey Stadium.

Looking ahead to the fixture, Derry said: “We’ll take Notts County on their merits; they are a very good football team on their day and probably similar to us in that they have struggled with a level of inconsistency throughout the season. They will be an interesting opponent.

“I felt there were a lot of positives that came from the last home performance, the major one for me being the backing that we received from the fans. There was the best part of 5,000 at the Abbey and I’m hopeful that they’ll be another big gate on Saturday as well.”
