Final pre-season Friendly at the Abbey Stadium
Cambridge United will tonight play their final game at the Abbey Stadium before the start of the 2015/16 Football League season, with Sky Bet League One side Coventry City set to visit the city. (Kick Off 7.45pm)
With just under two weeks to go before Richard Money’s side begin their new league campaign against Newport County, the U’s face two final pre-season tests with the first of those coming against the Sky Blues this evening.
To date strong performances against Premier League new boys Norwich City and their fierce Championship rivals Ipswich Town, have stood United in good stead ahead of the new season with all but the entire roster of players earning valuable game time under their belts.
A late goal from Robbie Simpson away at Bromley ensured the U’s secured a draw in the fixture at Hayes Lane on Saturday, in which Richard Money was able to tinker his side tactically and observe a number of formations throughout.
Meanwhile Tony Mowbray’s side arrive at the Abbey Stadium following a 1-1 draw against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on Saturday, as they prepare for a season in which they will hope to improve on last year’s 17th place finish in League One.
With a game against rivals Peterborough United following on Saturday for the U’s to celebrate the life of former player and manager Chris Turner, United boss Richard Money discusses his side’s final pre-season fixtures.
He said: “I am mindful that we still have two games to play, but if we come through those okay then I am confident we’ll be relatively healthy next week.
“Without the full group for the final two friendlies, with Donaldson, Carr, Gaffney and Harrison Dunk all missing, we have to share the minutes out as best we can so that we don’t overplay.
“I have had pre-seasons where it goes well, you win every game and then it all falls flat when you come to the opening day. Likewise I have had the opposite when an inconsistent pre-season is followed by everything falling into place on day one of the season.
“We will only know which route we have taken on 8th August but the players who have played a lot of minutes in the last month, I am very pleased with.”
Season ticket holders are able to attend the fixture totally free of charge, with collection available at the ticket office up until kick off at 7.45pm. Meanwhile for non-season ticket holders prices are £10 for adults, £5 for concessions and £1 for juniors in all areas of the ground.
