SIGNING - RYAN BIRD RETURNS

Bird is the word as Ryan returns to the Abbey

The 26-year old striker scored nine goals in 13 appearances during his loan spell, including the U's first goal in the 4-0 FA Trophy final win over Gosport Borough at Wembley.

Ryan returns to the U's after spending three months on loan at the R Costings Abbey Stadium last season.

CAMBRIDGE United have signed Ryan Bird on a one-year deal.

The club can also confirm that John Hunt has joined Wrexham on loan until January.

Ryan will wear number 32 and be available for selection when the U's travel to Newport County on Monday 8th September.

Jez concluded "You can't have too many centre forwards capable of scoring goals in your squad and he will add competition for places and options for Richard in that crucial area of the team."

Bird will add more fire-power to the existing U's strike force which includes Tom Elliott, Robbie Simpson, Kwesi Appiah and Jayden Stockley.

Discussing the new signing, Director of Football, Jez George, said: "We found out on Friday that Ryan had agreed to terminate his contact with Portsmouth by mutual consent.  He has then shown an unbelievable desire to join the club.  I know it is often said in press releases, but this really was a case of the player wanting to sign for Cambridge United ahead of any other club.  We are really happy to welcome him back.  We know him, he knows us and therefore both parties were keen to make it happen."
