Robert Osbourn Memorial Walk set for Saturday 19 October

Fans walking to the Cledara Abbey Stadium

Cambridge United Foundation are partnering with the British Heart Foundation and Cambridge Fans United for a fundraising walk to honour the memory of U's fans that have recently passed away...

Last year's walk was arranged specifically to pay tribute to our late friend and former CFU Chairman, Robert Osbourn, who sadly passed away last year and was a keen walker.

Simon Wall, Cambridge United Foundation’s Community Engagement Manager, explains, "The walk last year was such a great success, raising over £3000 and raising awareness about heart health, that with the blessing of Robert Osbourn’s family it was decided to do another event this year in his name.

"This time though, we really want it to be an opportunity to remember all of those Cambridge United fans that we have recently lost.”

Supporters are therefore invited to join us ahead of the Saturday 19th October home game against Wigan Athletic.

The self-guided walk will feature two routes of differing lengths.

  • 10k walk - Starts at CUFC Training Ground, Bentley Road - 10am
  • 5k walk - Starts at Jesus Green Kiosk - 11am

All routes finish at the Cledara Abbey Stadium ahead of kick-off, where walkers will receive their participation medals.

Although the walk is not just for remembering fans that have lost their lives due to heart disease, we still want to use the event to raise awareness for the illness.

Gary Atyes, Fundraising Manager of British Heart Foundation, Cambridgeshire said, “Through this walk, the BHF want to shine a spotlight on heart and circulatory diseases and raise funds for research, noting how such conditions can often go undiagnosed for too long, until problems occur or it’s too late.

“It happens far too often that families are robbed of a loved one far too early. Every two hours, someone under 50 dies of heart and circulatory disease, which is why it’s so important and [why] we’re so grateful and honoured to be partnering with CFU and the Cambridge United Foundation to raise awareness of these conditions.

“Heart and circulatory diseases affect one in two of us in our lifetimes, and that happens at all ages. The more we can do to be aware of that and to look after our hearts, the better it will be.

“Currently 94,000 people in Cambridgeshire are living with heart and circulatory diseases, however with the British Heart Foundation currently investing £40 million into groundbreaking research in the city at places like the Heart and Lung Research Institute on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Our city can help provide the answers to some of the world’s biggest killers.
