Opposition Focus
Founded in 1976 following the demise of the town’s former club, Stevenage began as a United Counties League club, but progress was skyrocketed in the early 1990s thanks to three promotions in four seasons. Despite winning the Conference National in 1996, they were denied entry due to insufficient ground facilities – they eventually fulfilled that dream for good in 2009/10, however. The two-time FA Trophy winners are now solidified in League One following a sensational promotion in 2023, where they carried on where they left off by finishing an impressive 9th position last time out. Now under the tutelage of Alex Revell, the no-nonsense outfit are well on course to record another top-half finish.
Consistency in performances has been the ultimate aim this season. Fortunately, as a result it has ensured they’ve clocked enough points to attack the second period with confidence thanks to their current showing of 12th. The first of 44 points arrived on the opening day as they dispatched Shrewsbury Town, with a 3-0 dismantling over Barnsley their only win from the following six. The tight scorelines continued, where they were on the receiving end of four defeats in October, but momentum was propelled in the winter months as they embarked on a run of just one loss in nine, which included six clean sheets in that time. A trio of successes heading into February, with the highlight a 2-3 win at Wrexham, put the within four points of the play-offs, but they now arrive at CB5 off the back of four defeats in six, so will be out to recapture some form.
Deploying a 4-2-3-1 system, Revell takes pride in the defensive solidity of the team, who have contributed to 15 shutouts – only Birmingham City have more. The backline could consist of loan goalkeeper Murphy Mahoney and a centre-back pairing of imperious captain Carl Piergianni, Dan Sweeney or former Premier League player Charlie Goode, with the likes of Nick Freeman and Lewis Freestone out on the flanks. Holding midfielder Louis Thompson has been a standout performer in the past couple of campaigns and combines well with the energy Harvey White supplies. The final third is blessed by the pace of Kyle Edwards on the right and the skill of Jordan Roberts on the other side, who’s almost amassed 150 appearances since his 2022 move. Dan Kemp looks to make things tick in the final third and, alongside striker Jake Young, both combined for 30 goals for Swindon Town in League Two last season so are deserving of the step up. January signing Brandon Hanlan has chipped in with two goals thus far, with Northern Ireland international Jamie Reid – who hit 22 in total in 2023/24 – always ready to make an impact.

The Amber Angle
Buoyed by over 1,200 of the amber nation, Cambridge United picked up their second triumph and clean sheet on the bounce last time out as they leap-frogged Crawley Town in the League One charts, courtesy of a well-earned 0-2 win.
A battling start to proceedings saw both sides venture forwards and try to find the foothold, with the U’s the first to capitalise when a dangerous, inswinging corner was bundled into his own net by Kamari Doyle. A feisty second half saw Rushian Hepburn-Murphy see red, with Neil Harris’ men latching onto their advantage by doubling the lead via Paul Digby’s venomous attempt. Although James Gibbons too received his marching orders mid-way through the second half, United remained resolute to preserve maximum points.
Reflecting on just their second away win of the campaign, the Head Coach said: "Back-to-back clean sheets, six points, four goals scored, we couldn’t have dreamed of anything more… Tuesday night we want more, we want another three points and another strong performance. It’s not just going to happen for us, but with an application like that and attitude like that - we’ve got some hope and belief."
A pleasing aspect from the weekend is that, for the first time since late January, the U’s rose from the foot of the table and up to 22nd, with the gap from safety reduced to six points. Returning home to play in front of their own faithful, where they’ve lost just once in four, will be enough motivation as they look to extend the winning start to Harris’ tenure.

Playing on the front foot since the first kick of the evening, the visitors registered a plethora of chances throughout a dominant first half and were rewarded with Korey Smith’s strike half an hour in. From here, they dug deep and bided their time before making sure of the win at the death when Sullay Kaikai finished off a counter to can an impressive showing.
