The 32-year-old midfielder arrives at the U’s following a five-year spell at Birmingham City. After coming through the Aston Villa Academy as a youngster, Gary progressed through to the First Team where he spent his first nine years as senior player.
After joining a number of club’s on loan throughout his time at Villa, it was a one-year loan deal at Birmingham City under Garry Monk which led to him joining them permanently the following summer.
He now reunites with the U’s Head Coach as he signs a two-year deal at Cambridge United. He will will join up with the squad in Portugal to take part in this week’s training camp.
“It’s a fresh start for me and I am really looking forward to getting started,” Gary said.
“Working with the Manager again was a big thing for me - I know what he can get out of me and I know what he can do for the team.
“After speaking to him, Ben and Michael Morrison about the Club, it seems like a really exciting time to be joining and I am looking forward to playing my part in that.”
Garry Monk added, “Gary is a signing that has real pedigree and I am delighted to welcome him to the Club.
“He brings excellent quality as a player but also as a character to add to the dressing room.
"He is a superb addition to the squad and will help us grow as a team over the coming season and beyond. I am really looking forward to working with him again.”
A first interview with Gary will take place later this week from the Club's Training Camp in Portugal, in addition to the first images of him as a United player.
