Cambridge United’s second year scholars are taking significant strides in their football education journey by participating in the UEFA C coaching qualification, led by Daryl McMahon from the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA)...

This programme not only offers great insights into coaching, but also opens new avenues for the scholars’ personal and professional development, as the course emphasises the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment.

Throughout the course, the scholars engaged in a series of theoretical coach education sessions, where they explored various coaching practices, effective player management strategies and diverse learning styles which links in with his BTEC qualification.

A key component of the qualification involved planning and delivering practical coaching sessions to our Academy schoolboys at Newmarket. This hands-on experience, supported by Dario Seminerio, Liam Bloye and our Academy coaches, allowed the scholars to put their learning into practice.

The conclusion of this programme was a Youth Development Phase tournament, where each scholar had the opportunity to coach and manage their own team in a competitive yet enjoyable setting.

A special mention goes to Mamadou Jobe and his Academy team on the night, who were crowned champions of the tournament! This experience not only enhanced their coaching skills but also fostered our Academy values and our commitment to developing well-rounded individuals.

Harsh Joshi, Head of Education said, “For me it was great to see learning taking place both in the classroom and also out on the grass. It was evident to see the scholars progressing and developing their coaching sessions and confidence each week as they had to reflect back after each session, reviewing good practice on how they can improve the following week.

“This course will build a great foundation for the scholars who aim to further their coaching journey”

Daryl McMahon added, “It has been a pleasure to be part of the journey with the lads on the course, their confidence and personalities have grown and shone through throughout the length of the course.

“They have done well imparting their knowledge on the academy players whilst making the sessions fun and competitive. Hopefully we have some budding coaches in here once they have enjoyed their playing careers!”
