Cambridge United Women were denied all three points in tonight's FA Women's National League South East Division One clash following a late equaliser from visitors London Seaward...
After going ahead through Ruth Fox's brilliant curling effort at the start of the second half, United's opponents struck back late in the contest to ensure a share of the spoils.
An even but open first half saw little in the way of chances for either side. United’s best opportunity came from Ruth Fox following a superb through ball to the foward, however the Seaward keeper was quick to smother the shot.
The break was seemingly positive for the U’s as they came out racing in the second half and grabbed an early goal within 90 seconds of the restart. Fox getting on the end of a lovely switch of play from Gillies, before cutting inside her defender and sending a curling effort into the far top corner.
The game continued to be open for both sides, as chances for Fox and Abi Smith fell agonisingly wide, whilst at the other end Lauren Webb was called into action on a few occasions, including a fine one-on-one block to deny the equaliser.
United had stopped everything that came their way all game, before a sliced cross became their undoing. With just three minutes of normal time remaining, a deep cross flew over Webb and into the far corner, leaving the U's stopper with no chance to make the denial and a frustrating end to the game.
The result keeps London Seaward six points behind United in the league with a home game against Ashford Town on Sunday 24 March next up for Darren Marjoram's team.
