Cambridge United Academy celebrated its successes over the past year at the annual Terry Baker Memorial fixture last night…
Guests, staff and players of the Academy joined the Baker family at the Cledara Abbey Stadium to honour the year’s standout scholars, ahead of an U16s game against West Ham United.
George Hoddle was presented with the Scholar of the Year award for the second season in a row, following another superb 12 months for the youngster, who has thrived on and off the pitch, enjoying success whilst on loan at St Albans City and continuing to excel with his education.
Progress of the Year went to George Munday, who has impressed coaches with his attitude and performances across the past year and Liam Chadwick won Moment of the Year for his decision to seek and take up a scholarship offer with the Wisconsin Badgers.
All second-year scholars received a commemorate certificate following a three-course meal in the Layrd Lounge, before heading to the stands to watch the U16s take on West Ham.
An action-packed contest was enjoyed, as after United got off to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from U15 Daniel Herd and Jakayah Ebanks Blake, the Hammers showed their class to score five goals without reply and retain the Terry Baker Memorial Trophy.
Academy Manager Dom Knighton said, "It was another fantastic evening to celebrate the achievements of our U18s. Our scholarship programme is very demanding and each player shows a consistent commitment to the cause. To enjoy a night that celebrates each individual’s achievements is very fitting and a just reward.
"The annual event is going from strength to strength, which wouldn’t be possible without the support of Val and the whole Baker family. A big thank you also to West Ham United who continue to support the evening by bringing another talented crop of U16s."
