Cambridge United have appointed a Disability Supporter Liaison Officer (DSLO) to help support the football club in relation to improving access and inclusion for its disabled supporters, customers, employees, volunteers and players…
Matt Casey will serve as the Club’s first ever DSLO and work alongside the Club and SLO, Dave Matthew-Jones, to be the club’s key advocate and champion for all disability-related matters.
He will be the main point of contact between the football club and its disabled supporters, guests, players and employees and will work to facilitate a positive dialogue between the two parties.
Now a few weeks into the role, Matt says that his previous experience as an Abbey Helper was a big factor in motivating him to take the job.
“When I first came to the Abbey Stadium the friendly nature of the staff and volunteers was something that really struck a chord with me and made me want to volunteer as an Abbey Helper.
“I found it very appealing. There was such a welcoming environment at the Club and my time as an Abbey Helper really opened up my eyes to the different needs that supporters have and how we can make improvements to cater for them.
“The Club does a great job as it stands but there is so much more we can do.”
As DSLO, open lines of communication with internal and external groups is key and Matt says that he has been delighted with the buy-in he has received so far.
“We have got so many committed and enthusiastic individuals who just want to see success for the Club and to make sure that anyone who comes to the Abbey Stadium has a good experience.
“It’s really great to have that support network of people that are of a similar mind.
“There has been a lot of planning for next season and representatives from Level Playing Field have been really helpful in the advice and support they have offered.”
“It’s about seeing what we can do in the current climate, with our current stadium, to ensure inclusivity for everyone.
"Obviously there are certain restrictions we have with the Abbey but there is no restriction on our willingness to help and make the most of what we have.
"Supporters can contact me at any time about anything. Whether that's parking, tickets, drop-off and pick-up points, accessible local accomodation or information about the services we offer such as Picturepath, Audio for All and Sensory Bags."
