Okenabirhie joins U's ranks

Cambridge United are delighted to announce the signing of Fejiri Okenabirhie…

The 26-year old attacker joins Mark Bonner’s ranks on the eve of the 2022/23 season on a one-year contract.

After starting his career as a youth player at Arsenal, Okenabirhie joined Stevenage as a 16-year-old, where he signed his first professional contract. Following his release from the Hertfordshire club one year later, Okenabirhie signed for Harrow Borough in a bid to rebuild his career.

Moves to Dagenham & Redbridge, Shrewsbury Town and Doncaster Rovers followed, as Okenabirhie progressed back up the leagues to become a key player in League One for both the Shrews and Donny, where he scored 21 goals and 19 goals respectively for his two most recent former clubs.

After suffering an Achilles tendon injury that required surgery, Okenabirhie’s missed the 2021/22 campaign and now signs for the U’s looking to enjoy a bounce-back season.

“It feels really good,” Okenabirhie said. “I am happy to be part of this Club and I am looking forward to a good season. I had a tough last season but I am here now with a fresh start and I look forward to getting back on the pitch and helping the team.

“From the outside the club has been on an upward curve for the past couple of years and everyone I spoke to only had good things to say about it.”

Mark Bonner said, “Fejiri’s signing gives us excellent competition in the attacking line of the pitch and completes a really strong unit of the squad for us. His athletic qualities, technical ability and movement will be excellent additions for the team.

“Recovering from such a long time out can take time, and we are aware that Fejiri won’t be game ready for a little while, however, if we can help him return to his physical best and gradually increase his training load, we know we have a player who will make a good impression.

“Our aim and Fejiri’s aim is to return to the levels he hit the season before last, and with that collective desire, we are hopeful he can follow a similar path as many of our players and experience some highlights with us.

“We will be patient as we prepare him to be ready to a return to playing and think he will be a strong signing for us as he fits the bill perfectly for ability, athleticism and character to adjust to our environment quickly.”
