This Saturday's game against Sunderland represents our LGBTQ+ Matchday as we show our support for Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign...
Rainbow Laces have brought visibility for LGBTQ+ people in sport. More than a million people have laced up, and two thirds of sport fans who have seen the campaign believe they have a responsibility to stand in solidarity for LGBTQ+ fans of the teams and sports they follow.
However, the numbers also show there is still much to do with 43% of LGBTQ+ people still thinking that public sporting events aren’t a welcoming space for them.
Rainbow Corner Flags, Substitute Boards and Captain Armbands will be used for this Saturday's game against Sunderland to help further raise awareness of the discrimination that LGBTQ+ people receive and to send a message that Cambridge United is United with the LGBTQ+ community.
Indeed, with support from Football Foundation’s Return of Supporters Fund, Cambridge United Community Trust have launched an ‘Amber and Proud’ football session which takes place on Wednesday 7-8pm.
We all recognise the benefits that sport and physical activity can bring to our lives – not just in terms of our wellbeing, but also in the ways they bring people together.
People from all walks of life can gain a sense of belonging and community through shared passion, and LGBTQ+ people deserve to be a part of this. Click here for 10 tips on how LGBTQ+ allies can help ensuring that sport is truly inclusive for all.
