Message to Fans from Paul Barry.
As we said before the Colchester game it is more important to Cambridge United to get the appointment of the next Head Coach right rather than to do it quickly. Both the performances and the results of recent games have been positive and lifted any immediate pressure on our league position. The challenge ahead is obviously to maintain those standards and to finish as high up the table as possible.
The results have also given us the breathing space to look more strategically across the whole football side of the Club to help ensure that we are best set up for long term success. We have already started to do this with the partnership with St Neots for example. The last few years have taught us all the need for financial rigour and discipline - and we now have that at the Club for the first time in a while. The challenge now is to build on this financial foundation on the pitch so we can over perform against our budget - as other Clubs have done - and compete much higher up the table. We all recognise we have not done this consistently for a number of years and we are all ambitious to do much better. Assessing how best we can make that happen will take a little time as it would do in any business. There is a small window to do it now and we must not waste the opportunity as we balance speed with thoroughness.
I should underline to you all that I do plan on investing more on the football side of the business next season as we go forward as I want to help give all our fans more to cheer about. We will make the appointment of our next Head Coach in good time this season so they can also have a genuine opportunity to input into the squad and the planning for next season. Mark Bonner has done well since taking over in the short term and will continue to take charge of the first team in the meantime.
As ever we are all very grateful for your support. Our priority is to do better for you. Good luck to everyone tonight. I will be following the game very closely from the US as always.
