It is with immense sadness that Cambridge United Football Club confirm the passing of lifelong supporter and volunteer Carol Looker, who passed quietly at her home yesterday evening.
Carol was a close friend for many Cambridge United supporters, and for most U’s fans was the recognisable, wonderfully kind, friendly face on the away travel coach, seller of 50/50 tickets on match day at the Abbey and for a period in the Club shop.
Cambridge United Fans Elected Director Dave Matthew-Jones has penned an obituary on behalf of the Football Club, to pay tribute to a wonderful lady:
Walking past the Cut Throat Lane turnstiles on match day or travelling on the away travel coach will now never be the same again. No longer seeing Carol selling raffle or 50/50 tickets, will mean that a part of the match day experience will now be missing for many Cambridge United fans. She was a master of selling a ticket. A true expert. However hard you tried to avoid buying one, she would always catch you out with the knowing kind smile of a master at work.
It is fifty years since her love affair with Cambridge United United began, when she attended her first match at the Abbey Stadium.
I first knew Carol when she ran the Away Travel Race Nights. They were organised so that a collective group could afford to sponsor a player and support the Club. Over the years she completed so many tasks at the Club too. When the Club was on its knees, she was there to help out in the club shop/ ticket office. She would always do whatever was needed to help support the Club and players she loved.
How many supporters below the age of 35 have organised their away match travels arrangement through Carol? How many younger ones were looked after by her? Without Carol they would not have been able to travel on their own to matches.
The players she sponsored and those she supported from the terrace all loved her and she never let them down with her loyal support. Never criticising anyone who wore the Black and Amber of Cambridge United.
Football Clubs need supporters like Carol. Individuals who give everything to their club. Never questioning and only supporting.
I am sure Carol will be waiting for the arrival of all and every Cambridge United supporter at the gates of heaven, to offer us a friendly welcome and to ask if we want "one ticket for 50 pence or three for a pound."
An extremely sad day for her family and everyone at Cambridge United Football Club. Thank you Carol. Rest in Peace.
Everybody at Cambridge United Football Club would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Carol’s closest friends and family, during this incredibly sad time.
