PROGRAMME PREVIEW:
The former U’s academy man thinks the feeling of disappointment from the consecutive defeats to Oldham and Port Vale in United’s previous two outings has been more intense due to the manner in which the side kicked off the campaign. Having shown the supporters and proved to themselves the quality within the first team group, Hannant says dropping below their own standard has stung.
“It was a great start to the season and we showed the fans very early on the hard work we had put into being ready for the games, and went into them all guns blazing. It’s a shame we haven’t kept up that form in the last couple of matches.
“Although we knew we weren’t going to go through the whole season without losing a game, it feels disappointing for us and I’m sure the fans too because of how well we started. But I do feel it is just a blip and we must take the positives from the first four games to get back to what we were doing right.
“We know our responsibility and even in the Oldham game, we restricted them to three shots on target and they scored from two of them so despite dominating the game it was one that got away from us a little. So we know that we are good enough and that recent results have got away because of our performance rather than other teams being better. It is down to us, and we just need to sharpen up and use the positive vibes from the first four games.”
Finally, Hannant is confident the quality throughout United’s squad is of a high enough standard that when accompanied with a willingness to work hard for each other, results will follow and that their long-term vision for the season can be achieved on the evidence of the first month.
“There has been good squad rotation for the gaffer to pick from and he is obviously not scared to make a few changes because we have got good quality and talent from players who can all make an impact. We know everyone is able of taking up a position in the team and doing the job required.
“It’s important we work hard as a team and individuals to make sure the little blips that you experience throughout a season don’t carry on.
“The hopes at the very start of the season are always high and you set yourself targets about what you want to achieve as a group. We want to go into each game aiming to win, that will put Cambridge United back up the League.
“We’ve shown in the first month it’s a fresh team, with quality and young legs that are capable of pushing for play offs. There’s the depth to do that this season and performances particularly at the start of August show we are capable of playing to that level.”
