Cambridge United are pleased to announce the returning Academy Stadium fixtures for 2019/20 will be renamed the Terry Baker Memorial Matches, beginning with the visit of Manchester City U15/U16s in October.
Over the past four seasons, the U’s Academy have played host to some of the country’s biggest footballing names at the Abbey Stadium, with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United all taking on United’s oldest schoolboy age group. And now Manchester City are the latest name to confirm a visit to the Abbey on Thursday 24th October, kick off 6:30pm!
The fixtures have always been well-attended and popular evenings with the Amber Army, who not only have the chance to watch the youngsters being developed through the Club’s youth system but also some of the brightest young talents in the country in action too.
This season the Club have also moved to rename the stadium games in honour of former Chairman and Director Terry Baker, who sadly passed away last year, recognising his work and financial support for the Club’s youth system over his tenure at the U’s.
Cambridge United Academy Manager Tom Pell commented: “Once again we’re really pleased to be hosting another Academy fixture at the Abbey Stadium, and to be completing the ‘big six’ with the visit of Manchester City.
“Firstly, it is with a huge amount of pride that these fixtures now carry the name of the late Terry Baker. Having met with his wife Val ahead of the season, we thank her for agreeing to allow us to use these games to remember Terry and all the fantastic work he did towards not only the Academy but the Club generally during his time as Chairman and as a Board member.
“As for the fixture, again we encourage as many Cambridge United supporters to attend as possible during half-term to ensure the boys are able to gain the maximum benefit from the experience. The support really has been superb through the years of doing these fixtures so far.
“Finally, we are extremely grateful to Manchester City and Ryan Semple in particular for committing to the fixture and look forward to welcoming them to the Abbey Stadium next month.”
