Take a sneak peek at this weekend’s match day programme and the player feature with U’s loanee striker, Sam Smith!
The Amber Rambler will be available to buy around the ground, from the CFU Van, and in the club shop for just £3. Tickets for tomorrow’s fixture are still available online here, and will also be available in the ticket office on match day until kick off at 3:00pm.
PROGRAMME PREVIEW:
Having experienced the setbacks of previous loans, Smith arrived at the Abbey very conscious of the extended period since scoring his last League goal, which as a striker was proving to be a bigger burden the longer it went on.
The 21-year old therefore admits that seeing the net bulge for the first time against Crewe Alexandra as he registered his first for the U’s felt like an extra special moment.
He explained: “There was quite a long time since my last League goal before I arrived here, so the first goal that I scored at Crewe last month really did mean a lot. I think you could see that in the way that I celebrated after that one. It was a feeling of real relief more than anything.
“I knew then and I think the lads knew too, that with the first goal out the way it could set me up for the rest of the season. Even through the first eight games this season where I didn’t score, I felt like I was playing well enough, working hard for the team and that it would be a matter of time.”
Smith now finds himself on five goals, mixing it with the top scorers in the division and the striker says the confidence he feels flowing through him on the pitch currently, has been the biggest aspect he has found toughest to go without during a difficult couple of years.
“The feeling that I have now, is the thing that I have been missing for a long time, and it’s a feeling of pure confidence. Knowing that every game I am going to be playing, and that in the game I’ll probably get a chance and when you are doing well, you find that those chances usually go in.
“It’s a good feeling and something you just want to keep hold of. It’s five goal now but I am confident that can be more as the season goes on, and I’ll keep getting myself in the position to add to that.”
