Cambridge United can confirm details of the Football Club’s Remembrance ceremony to take place ahead of kick off at this Saturday’s fixture against Crawley Town at the Abbey Stadium.
With the weekend’s match the final home League game closest to Remembrance Sunday, the Club have been working closely with the Royal Anglian Regiment and Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force to plan a special pre-match ceremony for Cambridge United’s players, staff and supporters to mark our respects collectively to those who gave their today for our tomorrow.
We are delighted to announce that a Corps of Drums and Pipes from Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force will be attending the game, to begin the ceremony by playing the players out of the tunnel ahead of kick off. They will also return for a second performance on the Abbey turf at half time.
The Royal Anglian Regiment will also be taking to the field in order to lay a wreath alongside Club CEO Ian Mather. The stadium will then observe a period of silence whilst the Last Post will be played by buglers from Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force.
The Amber Rambler (Match Day Programme) will be adorned with a special front cover, as well as featuring a piece inside honouring the memory of two U's who sadly died in the world wars.
The first team players will also be wearing armbands featuring a poppy during the game.
Finally a bucket collection will take place across the Abbey Stadium with proceeds to go to the Royal British Legion, and Cambridge United encourages supporters to donate as generously as possible.
The Club will still observe a period of silence ahead of the home Emirates FA Cup fixture against Exeter City on Saturday 9th November, given the match is the closest to Remembrance Sunday. However, the Club’s plans for a full ceremony had been in place ahead of the FA Cup draw earlier this month.
