Cambridge United are delighted to introduce tonight’s 12th Fan and therefore leading the U’s out at the Abbey Stadium against Crewe Alexandra, is Carol Sprague.
As part of the #UnitedSince1912 campaign, the U's are delighted to introduce the 12th Fan initiative supported by Mick George, which will see a Cambridge United supporter profiled on the Club website, feature in the U’s squad list as number 12 on the programme and lead out the U's at the Abbey Stadium on every match day in 2018/19!
The 12th Fan for this evening's fixture against Crewe Alexandra is Carol Sprague. She reveals her story of supporting the U’s.
The first match I attended at Cambridge United was at the start of the 1957-58 season. I can't remember the opposition but the team included Brian Moore (ex-West Ham) and Wilf Mannion (England international).
I went with my Dad and Uncle, both lifelong United fans. The floodlights had just been installed, which Cambridge City fans called them Candles on Sticks because they were lights on top of telegraph poles.
We stood behind the goal at the allotment end for a couple of seasons then progressed to the Habbin Stand. When the new Main Stand was built we had season tickets there and I've had the same seat ever since.
My late husband and elder daughter were also big fans and at one time there were five of us sitting in a row in A Block. There have been so many highs and lows over the years. Just think in the 1970's and 80's United were playing in the same League as Chelsea, West Ham, Sunderland, Happy Days!
Then in 2005 plunged into the Conference for nine years. But win, lose or draw they are MY Club who have given me and my family so much enjoyment over the years and that is why it will be thrill to lead the team out tonight.
Tickets for tonight’s game are still available online at cufcdirect.com now.
