CENTURION GEORGE MARIS: “CAMBRIDGE UNITED THE BEST DECISION OF MY CAREER”

Having featured in his 100th game for the U’s on Saturday at Notts County, George Maris is feeling positive about life at the Abbey, noting it as the best move of his career.

“I really couldn’t have hoped for my time here to go any better than it has so far,” said the 22-year old.

“I’ve now played 100 games after Saturday, and when I first joined that was something that I couldn’t have even wished for.

“I mean I just go out and play every week, give what I can to the team so I didn’t really notice I was playing up to 100 games but it’s a proud achievement. I am loving every bit of it, it’s been brilliant for someone of my age.

“When I left Barnsley I was in a stage in my life where I didn’t really know what to do or where to go and Cambridge United really has since been the best thing for me.

“I was at a stage where I was in and out of teams, going on loan to the conference and I just needed somewhere at a club where I could get my head down and play a lot of games. That has been brilliant for me and by far the best decision of my career so far, signing for Cambridge United when I did.”

Looking forward Maris stresses his main interest currently is continuing to pull on the Amber and Black shirt every week and giving his all towards the team’s performance, in order to play his part in United climbing up the League Two table.

He said: “I’ve wanted to focus on the football because right now for all of us the Club is the main focus. It’s not about individuals when you find yourself in the area of the League we are currently, it’s all about us pulling on the shirt and giving what we can for the team.

“All I want to do is to focus on playing for Cambridge United, keep doing what I’m doing.

“I want to keep scoring goals and doing my job for the team. I’ve played a lot of games again this season, and I’m wanting that to carry on.

“I try to keep myself as fit as I can all the time and keep myself in contention to be picked at a weekend. As long as I’m in a position to contribute to the team and give the team what I can on a Saturday, I’m happy.”
