This afternoon Cambridge United hosted the Area Finals of the EFL Girls Cup at Newmarket Town F.C, with eight local sides competing for a place in the next stage of the competition.
Having progressed through Cambridge United’s Club Finals last month, in which they beat St Ivo School via a penalty shoot-out in that particular final, the team of girls from Parkside Community College returned to represent the U’s today.
They were up against eight teams of girls from secondary schools representing the following professional sides from across the local area:
Stevenage
Luton Town
Peterborough United
Wycombe Wanderers
Norwich City
Ipswich Town
Colchester United
The girls were unfortunately knocked out at the quarter final stage by Norwich City, but did a fantastic job in representing the U’s.
Meanwhile, it was the side representing Colchester United who prevailed in a final also decided on penalties against Wycombe Wanderers, meaning they progress into the next stage and move one step closer to a showpiece final taking place at Wembley Stadium later this season!
Thanks to all of the teams involved in a well-contested and high quality Area Finals this afternoon, and a big thank you also to Newmarket Town for their excellent facility.
