PROGRAMME PREVIEW:

Marc Richards desperate to be part of something “successful’ with the U’s….

United’s new man, affectionately known as ‘Rico’ by his team mates, talks the experience he aims to inject into the U’s group, his relationship with the gaffer and his intention to quickly drop the “grandad” tag….

568 Appearances, 180 goals - that’s a classy return for any striker, not to mention the levels Richards has played at across the Championship, League One and League Two. The new United frontman, who like team mate Jabo Ibehre can be probably be regarded as the most experienced of professionals currently still plying their trade in the Football League.

His list of clubs include Northampton Town, with whom he won promotion most recently with in the 2015/16 season, having done so a decade earlier at the Cobblers. He also has a promotion win with Barnsley and Chesterfield to his name, so there’s no question of the striker’s pedigree when it comes to climbing tables.

Despite all that has gone before however, the now 37-year old is still as determined as ever to be a part of something ‘successful’ with the U’s.

“Yeah, certainly, that is the aim, I am still hungry for success. I see this group as one that has the ability to push forward. I’ve played against Cambridge a couple of times, and at times it wasn’t pretty for the club.

“I see this group now as one that can look forward rather than back though, and try and create something that I’ve experienced in the past with my promotions.”

His move to United took a little time to materialise, with Head Coach Colin Calderwood, originally making contact with Richards at the beginning of pre-season.

“I spoke to Colin at the start of the summer and we had a chat, he expressed an interest then. Obviously things at this point didn’t really develop, until the latter part of the summer when I was invited to come in and train for a few days for me to come and have a look at the club and the environment, and also for them to look at me and my level of fitness at that point.

“I was over the moon that Colin gave me that opportunity and I am delighted to be involved now as well.”
