Cambridge United are pleased to announce the Club have captured the signature of midfielder Samir Carruthers on a one year contract following his departure from Sheffield United.
The 26-year old former Republic of Ireland U21 international completes his deal, having trained with the U's since mid-July and featured in United's pre-season fixture against Ipswich Town, Rangers XI and Hearts. His arrival adds further competition to Colin Calderwood's midfield options for the 2019/20 Sky Bet League Two season.
Carruthers already has links to the Abbey Stadium having been a player within the Club's centre of excellence over 14 years ago, and re-joins the U's after gaining a wealth of Football League experience across a number of levels including the Championship. Meanwhile, Carruthers has also appeared a combined 20 times for Republic of Ireland's U19s and U21s, scoring four goals.
Delighted to finally officially be a member of Cambridge United's squad, Carruthers commented: "I have been here a little while now, and with everything done and dusted I can now look forward to the season ahead.
"I went on tour with the boys and settled in really well, and the Manager (Colin Calderwood) has been brilliant with me. I have history with this Club and it's near to my family as well, plus I'd heard about the Manager from Mark Bunn (Goalkeeper Coach) and the way that he wanted to play football this season which really suited me.
"Since coming in I have really taken to it and enjoyed being here, so it seemed the perfect fit to get my career back on track and play some football. I hope to help the team in different situations throughout this season and be able to use my experience from my career to date."
He added: "I feel like I have a new energy and feel good about myself again after what has been a tough period in my career with injury and stuff. I can feel there are positive vibes here.
"The aim is to win as much as we can and I want to do what I can for the team and the Club. I'm really looking forward to it."
Making his senior debut for Aston Villa in 2012, the midfielder joined MK Dons in 2014 where he won promotion from League One a year later, before repeating the feat with the Blades in 2017. More recently Carruthers impressed on loan at Oxford United before injury disrupted his form last season, ultimately leading to his exit from Bramall Lane and arrival at the Abbey where he will wear the number 21 shirt for the forthcoming campaign.
