As part of the #UnitedSince1912 campaign, the U's are delighted to introduce the 12th Fan initiative supported by Mick George, which will see a Cambridge United supporter profiled on the Club website and match day programme, occupy the number 12 shirt and lead out the U's at the Abbey Stadium on every match day in 2018/19!
Stadium on every match day in 2018/19!
The 23 supporters have been selected at random, having secured their season ticket ahead of the #UnitedSince1912 Early Bird deadline back in May.
The 12th Fan for this weekend’s fixture against Mansfield Town is Steve Rutterford.
How long have you been supporting Cambridge United?
The first game that I attended was a on a Tuesday night in 1979 against Millwall. I had been following the U’s for some time prior to that through the local press but the atmosphere and the whole experience of seeing my local team “live” resulted in me being devoted for life.
Who have you attended the games with during the time you have supported the club and who do you attend the games with now?
In the early years I watched the matches with my mother and aunt but after going to the University of Nottingham in the early 1980’s I tended to travel to the games on my own. I still live in North Nottinghamshire now (Sutton in Ashfield) and have been dragging my close friend Mick to games in recent years – to share the driving and enable me to have a pint or three.
What is your best memory of supporting the club and why?
The best memories would have to be the 1989/1990 and 1990/1991 seasons with the great FA Cup runs that we had in those two seasons (and a Wembley win as well). Special mention must go to our final season (hopefully) of non-league football. To win the FA Trophy and the Conference Play-off Final was the perfect way to say good riddance to non-league.
A full interview with Steve will be available to read in this weekend's match programme.
