Liam O’Neil describes the U’s fixture against Macclesfield Town as a “massive game”, as Cambridge United look to capitalise on a productive week’s work in Sky Bet League Two so far.
He explained: “There’s no two ways about it, Saturday is a massive game against Macclesfield. We can’t get ahead of ourselves after a good week though.
“We’ll take the upcoming games one by one, look to build on performances and hopefully more results will then follow.
“We have been performing well for the last few weeks and for me the win that we got on Tuesday night at Swindon was coming.
“Everyone clicked into place and it was a great result especially after the draw at Lincoln. It’s time to be positive when moving on to the next game. Everyone has stuck together.
“There is a new confidence in the team and we have a good feeling about going out to get three points against Macclesfield on Saturday.”
United Head Joe Dunne described O’Neil as having “his most consistent run in the side” in his pre-match press conference, and the midfielder concurs that he has certainly been enjoying his current role in the team.
He said: “My first full 90 minutes of the season was against MK Dons in the last home game. That has really given me something to build on.
“I was obviously disappointed to be missing out on a few games earlier in the season, but you just have to stick at it, be resilient and then when you are given your opportunity make sure you take it.
“Joe picks a team to win a game on a Saturday, and when that includes me that is great. Even when I’m not though, there is competition in the team now that you know someone else is capable of doing the job.”
O’Neil did admit he is desperate to add a few goals to his game, he continued: “I really don’t know how I haven’t scored!
“I’ve had chances in the games against MK Dons and Crawley. I’m sure it will come and I just have to keep working on the training pitch, making sure I’m getting plenty of shots in and finishing with the lads.
“As is the case with every player, I think when a couple of goals do eventually hit the net then you will be more confident in front of goal and I’m sure it will come more naturally.
“I’m hopeful of contributing on the goals front.”
