ETHOS COMMUNITY HERO | MICK RADFORD

Cambridge United pleased to announce the Ethos Community Hero for tonight’s fixture against Forest Green Rovers, is CFU volunteer Mick Radford.

In partnership with Cambridge United's Official Match Ball and Website sponsors Ethos, each match day this season will see an individual rewarded for their contribution to sport in the community as the Hero of the Day.

Fans Elected Director Dave Matthew-Jones, pays tribute to Mick’s fantastic contribution across the Abbey Stadium.

“Where can I start when writing about Mick Radford. I have known him since the late 1970's when we worked together.

He does not really like football and has rarely gone to a match at the Abbey in his lifetime. By heart he is a drummer and loves his music. Even if he doesn't like my singing or appreciate it. I won't hold any grudges against him.

However, when I saw him outside Tesco's last year, I had to ask him and provide the opportunity for him to work with me again. I don't really know if the face he pulled was one of fear, panic or excitement at the prospect. He agreed to do so following the gentle persuasion of his wife Caroline who many will know works in the Supporters Club on match days.

I knew he had the skills we required to help the group working at the Abbey having worked at Wolfson College for 30 years as a maintenance man. He has the technical knowledge, the knowhow and quality of work needed to complete the jobs around the ground in a professional way.

He looks and shakes his head in disbelief at some of the things I suggest we do, but he then goes away and does them properly. Best of all he likes to start early and always has a cup of tea ready at half seven for myself and anyone else wanting one.

Every team needs a Mick even if he does keep telling me about all the jobs he still has to do at home.”

We are delighted Mick joins us this evening and will present the official match ball sponsored by Ethos to our match referee Charles Breakspear.
