Billy Waters is thrilled to have teamed up with the U’s having pulled on the amber and black shirt for his United debut Saturday, and is looking forward to what the rest of his loan spell will bring.
The 23-year old, who arrived from Northampton Town late last week, quickly impressed U’s fans with his lively playing style having been thrust straight into action by Head Coach Shaun Derry.
Commenting on his first outing for the U’s, Waters said: “I really loved my debut, and I thought the lads produced a positive performance albeit against a strong side in Mansfield.
“Things in football can happen really quickly. I first heard about the interest around two weeks ago from my agent, I was desperate to get it over the line and get to the Club to play some football. These things do take some time, but last week it seemed to take place really quickly. I received a call around 4pm on Thursday and by 10pm I was tucked up in bed in Cambridge.”
He continued: “I really am delighted to be here, and it felt so good to be back out there on the pitch playing football. The gaffer (Shaun Derry) showed a lot of interest, and as a player it is always nice to feel that are wanted, so that was a big factor in coming to Cambridge.
“I’m not one of those who just likes to sit on the bench and pick their money up, I want to be out there especially at this age. I’d heard a lot about Cambridge United from players I know who play In League Two, seen where the Club were five points off the play-offs in the table and it was all very appealing.
“So I’m really excited to see what can happen during my time here.”
The diminutive striker admits he likes to make himself a “nuisance” in and around opposition defences and certainly gave a sample of that on debut against the Stags Saturday.
However Waters still feels there is more in the tank to show the Amber Army and has the attributes to add something extra to the U’s first team squad in their push up the League Two ladder.
He said: “Goals is my main focus, and I was disappointed not to get on the end of a few against Mansfield but I do have to take things slightly slower at the minute as I hadn’t played for around a month before that.
“I would like to think that I’m sharp on the ball, will run all day and give 110% every match. I felt I gave glimpses of that and when I’m back to full match sharpness there will be more to come, especially on the goals front.
“I look to be on the move in the box, and being small it’s hard for big defenders to pick you up so sometimes I can go by unnoticed. I definitely like to think I’m that fox in the box but one that can add other aspects. My game is about creating chances, scoring chances and just being a nuisance.
“As I say I feel really privileged to be here. Hopefully the fans, the staff and the players take a warming to me and accept me for what I can bring.”
