Having enjoyed a fruitful pre-season on the road, the former Partick Thistle and AFC Wimbledon man registered a brace at the Abbey on Saturday, marking his first home goals since arriving at the club.
Azeez can’t hide delight at getting off the mark on home soil and is thrilled to have shared the moments with the Amber Army during his celebrations.
“It’s always nice to help the team by getting the goals and it was important to me to get off the mark now that we are out of pre-season and into the games where it matters.
“With it being my first goals at home, that’s a big thing for me and it’s positive to have done that so early in the season where I have the confidence to go on and get more from here. The roof came off the stadium when the second goal went in and that’s a nice feeling too.
“You could see that relief in my celebration, and the togetherness between everyone in the ground was there for all to see. I perhaps got a little too involved in the celebration for the first, and I gave a few people hugs in the crowd but that was a brilliant and shows we are one.”
Discussing the result generally, Azeez was pleased with the character shown by the U’s, he continued: “Whenever you come back from a goal down or you’re behind in a game, then it makes it even better to fight back.
“Joe always talks to us about having no fear, and having a belief inside that we can achieve what we want to. We will face adversity, that happens in football but no matter what, have that belief and identity. I felt we showed that on Saturday because it’s been instilled within us.
“The three points was the main thing, especially after the disappointment of the first game at Port Vale. I wouldn’t say there was pressure on the Notts County game, but pressure from ourselves because we wanted to get that first win under our belt and give the fans something to cheer about.
“It was a great feeling to be able to do that.”
