The relatively short away trip to Stevenage F.C at the weekend was most certainly a pleasurable one for ten fortunate U’s supporters.
The sun was shining down on the group in a literal and metaphoric sense, as the team managed a resounding 0.2 victory over their local rivals, with fans favourite Barry Corr notching a brace on his return to goal scoring form.
Collected from the Abbey Stadium and chauffeur driven to the Lamex Stadium VIP style, that was just the beginning of the special treatment that the fans were presented with, courtesy of the Clubs’ official kit-sponsor Mick George Ltd.
The local-derby fixture was suitably celebrated from the off. Refreshments were freely flowing in the specially arranged transportation as the group headed towards a nearby hotel where the players were congregating to complete the necessary pre-match rituals.
On arrival, the supporters got the opportunity to gather signatures, photographs and brief conversations with the squad and management staff – the guests even got a sneak-preview of the team news prior to any official announcement.
Kick-off was nearing, which subsequently meant that the group needed to make ‘tracks’ ahead of the three-course meal and a full-hospitality package that awaited at the Stadium.
After a first half of little incidence, the second had much more to shout about. The match was turned on an inspired substitution which saw the introduction of Barry Corr, swinging the fixture in favour of the visiting team, and ensuring that the celebrations continued for the group as they made their way back to Cambridge.
Alex Broughton, Head of E-commerce at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’The group all seemed to really enjoy the occasion and the return journey was definitely a lot more jovial having taken all 3-points. The Clubs’ supporters have been fantastic this year and we wanted to reward that loyalty.’’
