POST-MATCH: SHAUN DERRY

Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry is confident the U’s have the capabilities within the first team squad to turn their fortunes around in Sky Bet League Two. 

Despite a strong second half performance from the U’s against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Saturday afternoon, in the end United were edged out 2-1 by the Pilgrims.

Speaking post-match Derry commented: “We had a game plan that aimed to keep a very vocal crowd at Home Park quiet and we unfortunately gave them a head start which was disappointing, because we came into the game on the back of two positive performances.

“However, I was pleased with the improvements made in the second half and the players certainly responded well to lift their performance levels.

“Adam McGurk had a positive impact on the game when he came on at the end of the first half, and as the game progressed he grew stronger which put us on the front foot.

“It was pleasing to see the number of chances we were creating. The save from Joe Pigott’s header by Plymouth’s was excellent and if that goes in I’m sure it would have changed the fortunes of the match.

“We’re delighted with the goal we did score because it was a well worked move.”

He continued: “We’ll travel back to Cambridge disappointed but at the same time we have to look forward because in the last four or five games there have been large periods where we’ve looked like a good team.

“We’ll stick together to get out of the rut we are in.”
