MATCH REPORT: CAMBRIDGE UNITED 1 YEOVIL TOWN 0

A second half strike from Mark Roberts secured Cambridge United a thoroughly deserved first home League win of the season against Yeovil Town at the Cambs Glass Stadium.

Following a dominant first half display, the centre back tapped in from close range on 65 minutes to edge United in front with Shaun Derry’s men showing excellent composure to see out the result and move up three places in the division.

The U’s piled early pressure on to the visitors, with Adam McGurk close to pinching possession from Artur Krysiak inside ten minutes, when the Glovers keeper was caught on the ball by the striker, before clearing his lines following a rather fortuitous bounce.

Ryan Hedges came closest of any Yeovil player to breaking  the deadlock when he got on the end of a dangerous cross from the left, only to miss Will Norris’ target from point blank range.

McGurk was within fractions of giving the U’s a deserved first half lead when he struck a sweet left footed free kick from 30 yards on 35 minutes which clipped the outside of the netting.

Shaun Derry’s men finished the half as the dominant force, hounding the Glovers for possession on the edge of their 18 yard box and stretching Yeovil defensively at every possible opportunity.

United continued to press the visitors high up the pitch in the second half and Manager Shaun Derry introduced Uche Ikpeazu in place of Jake Gosling before the hour mark to give the U’s additional fire power to clinch three points.

United’s arduous work rate paid off in the 65th minute, when Artur Krysiak could only parry McGurk’s powerful header into the path of Mark Roberts who tapped the ball in from two yards out to send the Newmarket Road End into sheer delight.

The centre back almost made it 2-0 to the U’s 12 minutes later, when he flicked a Dunk cross goalwards, only for Krysiak to produce a stunning reaction save to keep the deficit at one goal.

However, the U’s held out excellently and showed real endeavour to ensure they picked up a vital three points.
