REACTION: SHAUN DERRY
Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry praised his side for the way they controlled this afternoon’s clash with Yeovil Town, in a 3-0 victory at the Abbey Stadium.An early goal from Ben Williamson settled the U’s down against a Glovers side who had not conceded in over 450 minutes of football prior to the game, before United took charge of the match and went on to seal the three points.
Speaking post-match the U’s boss described his satisfaction at the intelligence of United’s play whilst assessing the performance.
Derry said: “Going into the game, we knew we were up against a team high in confidence on the back of one defeat in ten games.
“I felt we started the game in exactly the right manner with a high intensity and we were clinical with an early goal that settled everybody down.
“From that point on, it proved to be a very profitable afternoon for us. We wanted to dictate the quality and the pace of today’s game, and I certainly we felt that we handled the situation well particularly in the first half.
“In certain areas of the pitch we needed to be ruthless and the midfield three of Berry, Ledson and Dunne controlled the game in the first 45 minutes.
“We scored two goals at exactly the right time, in terms of the second before half time and the third which sealed the game.”
The U’s now head into a tricky Easter period in which they’ll face two of the teams making up the League Two automatic promotion places, Bristol Rovers and Oxford United.
However Derry is relishing the encounters and states United will fight hard for everything they can get in the final nine games of the season.
He commented: “We now have a crucial weekend coming up against two big teams in our League. Bristol Rovers will approach the game following a big 4-1 victory over Newport, which highlights what a tough afternoon we’ll have next Friday.
“However, we still go into that game with a great deal of confidence and all we want is to be playing for something right up to the end of this season.
“We have nine games left and we have to play for every single point available which is what we will be aiming for next weekend.”
