DERRY “ENCOURAGED” BY OXFORD PERFORMANCE

POST-MATCH: SHAUN DERRY

Following a well-earned point against high flying Oxford United at the Abbey Stadium on Monday, Shaun Derry felt encouraged that his side had made significant progress since arriving at the club last November.

The U’s more than matched their Sky Bet League Two opponents in a highly entertaining fixture for 6,108 supporters to feast their eyes upon on Easter Monday, with Derry optimistic about United’s display.

He said: “It was very encouraging the way we played, especially after Friday’s game at Bristol which was a disappointment.

“We took the game to the opposition, particularly in the first half where if there was to be a team coming in with the advantage, then it should have been us.

“With seven games left of the season, I’m not too sure there will be many teams that take the game to Oxford the way that we did.

“The match was full of excitement, it was intense, and the atmosphere was fantastic in the stadium. The quality was there at the right times and we just missed that clinical moment, but it was an accomplished performance.

“Having watched my first game at Oxford back in November and comparing it to the quality of performance on Monday, everybody should be happy with the progression.”

The U’s boss paid tribute to the terrific support of the Amber Army throughout the afternoon and added: “They were absolutely magnificent!”

“We unfortunately didn’t give those who travelled to Bristol on Friday much to cheer about, but to come back to the Abbey Stadium to a 6,000 plus attendance who all created a brilliant atmosphere was great for the players. It gave them a boost.

“I’m delighted we were able to send them home with a good result in the bag.

“It was an excellent 90 minute performance and I’ll be expecting the same when we travel to Accrington next week, which will be another tough game.”
