Pre- Bristol Rovers and Oxford United interview with Shaun Derry
Cambridge United boss Shaun Derry looks ahead to a crucial Easter weekend of Sky Bet League Two clashes.United travel to the Memorial Stadium tomorrow afternoon to take on Bristol Rovers, who currently occupy third place in the division, before returning to home soil on Monday to face another side chasing automatic promotion in Oxford United.
Rather than being over-awed by the fixture list, Derry feels the U’s will turn the quality of opposition into a positive as they go toe-to-toe with some of League Two’s best sides.
He said: “Friday’s game with Bristol Rovers will be a mouth-watering match for everybody. We’ll be travelling with good numbers to support us and Bristol will have a fantastic following at home as they always do which is great.
“They have won five games on the bounce and we want to be going up against the best teams in the division.
“The next two or three games will be fantastic because we have something to play for and that is all we could hope for at this stage of the season.
“This weekend there are number of teams inside the top 12 playing against each other, so there will be points dropped from certain quarters. For us up against Bristol Rovers and then Oxford United on Monday, we know we have a great opportunity to progress.”
The U’s boss could hardly hide his excitement at the Easter period and is highly anticipating both the away support at Bristol and the prospect of a rocking Abbey Stadium on bank holiday Monday against Oxford United.
“These are big games. It’s great for the players who all want to be involved in these big games. The travelling support will of course create a superb environment and atmosphere at Bristol.
“I’m sure when we return to the Abbey Stadium on Monday against Oxford United, we’ll have another great gate which will produce more vocal support. We’ll need it!”
