U'S AGREE TWO-YEAR CONTRACT WITH MEDY ELITO
Cambridge United have agreed terms on a two-year contract with Zaire-born winger Medy Elito who becomes the U's latest addition ahead of the 2016/17 season.
The 25-year old joins Shaun Derry's side from Newport County, having featured 43 times for the South Wales outfit during the 2015/16 Sky Bet League Two campaign.
Beginning his career as a youth product of Colchester United, Elito broke through into the first team in 2007/08 making his Football League debut against Plymouth Argyle as a 17-year old in the Championship.
The tricky midfielder racked up 19 appearances across a four year spell for the Essex side, as well as enjoying periods on loan with Cheltenham Town and Dagenham & Redbridge, where he added a further 14 League Two and 10 League One appearances.
Elito then made the move to the Daggers permanent ahead of the 2011/12 season, enjoying a three year stint at Victoria Road, playing 115 times and scoring 18 goals. A season with Dutch outfit VVV-Venlo in the Eerste Divisie followed, before Elito returned to the Football League last season to ply his trade at Rodney Parade for Newport County.
Commenting on his arrival at the U’s, Elito said: "Cambridge United is a good team so I’m very pleased to be signing.
“After I spoke to the Manager and to Jez George (CEO), they told me about where they wanted to take the club and it feels like the right place to move forward. I also like that it’s a family club.
“It’s a great opportunity to push myself on as a player, and for the team I’ll be looking to play my part to continue moving upwards.”
He added: “It will be great to play for a manager who has been and done many things in the game himself, and we have spoken about how he can help me develop. I’m sure he’ll get the best out of me.
“I played at Cambridge United for the first time last year, it was the opening game of the season and there were a lot of fans there supporting, and now I’m looking forward to experiencing that. The club gets around 6,000 fans a week at home, and that creates a good atmosphere to play in.
“I’ve been working hard at my fitness so that I come in for pre-season in the best possible shape. I’m ready to work and want to show everyone what I’m capable of doing.”
Meanwhile Manager Shaun Derry was ecstatic with the new addition, and commented: "I'm delighted that we have been able to bring in Medy as the next signing for the upcoming season.
“Medy brings a different type of attacking option our way and is one I'm sure our fans will enjoy watching next season.
“Having been one of Newport’s stand out players last year, we’re expecting him to improve our forward options with the creativity he possesses.
“We all welcome him here and wish him the best of luck at Cambridge United.”
Meanwhile, Danny Carr has departed the club having mutually agreed to cancel his contract with Cambridge United.
