CAMBRIDGE UNITED SIGN STRIKER JOE PIGOTT

Cambridge United have secured their second signing within 24 hours, as striker Joe Pigott switches to the Cambs Glass Stadium on a one year deal.

The 22-year old arrives at the U’s from Charlton Athletic and bolsters Shaun Derry’s options up front, adding competition to the forward positions alongside Ben Williamson and Barry Corr.

Pigott has already played alongside the latter having spent an extensive spell on loan at Southend United from 2015, featuring in 43 games, scoring nine goals for the Shrimpers. He also played a key role in the Essex side’s League Two Play-Off final victory against Wycombe Wanderers registering a last gasp equaliser, before converting from 12 yards in a successful penalty shoot-out.

The Maidstone-born striker spent the second half of season on loan at Luton Town, finding the net five times in 10 starts at Kenilworth Road.

A product of the Charlton academy, Pigott rose through the ranks within the Addicks Under-21 side, and scored in his professional debut in 4-0 League Cup win over Oxford United in 2013 before making 12 Championship appearances.

Pigott joins United looking to progress his career under the guidance of Manager Shaun Derry.

Delighted to have completed a deal for the young forward, the U’s boss said: “Joe brings to us an added goal threat going into the new Sky Bet League Two season.

“After a number of loans spent with both League One and League Two clubs, he has a real understanding of what this level is all about.

“Once again he fits the profile of this Football Club, he has loads of potential and we’re very much looking forward to working him.”
