CAMBRIDGE UNITED AND NEWMARKET TOWN KICK OFF NEW PARTNERSHIP AT STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY

MATCH REPORT: NEWMARKET TOWN 0-4 CAMBRIDGE UNITED

Cambridge United defeated Newmarket Town 4-0 in the grand opening of the new facility at the Ridgeons Stadium.

Played on the new state-of-the art facility, which Cambridge United in partnership with Newmarket Town will now be able to use for future Academy, Shadow Academy and Community sport activities such as the upcoming summer Soccer Schools, Shaun Derry’s side continued their unbeaten pre-season run in some style.

The U’s were off to a lightening start in Suffolk, racing into a 2-0 lead in under two minutes.

Matt Foy thumped home the U’s opener in just 30 seconds after good wide play from Medy Elito, who wasted no time in assisting for a second time moments later when providing a cross for Joe Pigott to head in his fourth goal during the pre-season period.

Despite the Jockeys hitting the crossbar from a set piece in the fifth minute, United controlled the play for the remainder of the first half with Conor Newton, new loan signing Tom Dallison and Foy all heavily involved.

It was Newton who added to the U’s lead minutes before the break when he curled a 25 yard free kick into the top right corner of the net.

Pigott added to his tally four minutes after half time to tap in Foy’s cross after the youngster had powered past the Newmarket right back.

The introduction of Maris, Berry, Dunne and Williamson on the hour mark gave the U’s another burst of life, but they were unable to convert from a flurry of chances and the scoreline finished at 4-0.

Commenting on the evening and the state-of-the-art facility, U’s Boss Shaun Derry said: “It really is a fantastic venue and we’re delighted to be the team Newmarket selected for the grand opening.

“It’s a partnership that will be very beneficial to both clubs and from our point of view we feel very privileged to be able to host our community work and our Academy training on the new 3G.

“The match was another great opportunity to gain minutes for a lot of players and I felt that everyone used those minute well. Our pre-season now takes another step up as we welcome two good quality teams in Ipswich Town and Aston Villa to the Cambs Glass Stadium over the next week.”
