CAMBRIDGE UNITED CAPTURE SIGNING OF STRIKER SPENCER

U’S SIGN STRIKER JIMMY SPENCER ON SIX MONTH DEAL

Cambridge United have acquired the services of former Huddersfield Town and Notts County striker Jimmy Spencer on an initial six month contract.

The 24-year old has put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at the Abbey Stadium until at least the summer and gives Manager Shaun Derry additional options in attack.

Beginning his career with Huddersfield Town, where he spent six years in West Yorkshire progressing through the Terriers’ academy, Spencer made his first team debut in the League Cup against Preston North End in 2012 and took his Football League bow soon after.

He accumulated a total of 83 Football League appearances during loan spells with Morecambe, Cheltenham Town, Brentford and Scunthorpe, scoring 19 times.

In January 2014, Spencer joined Notts County on a short-term contract which was extended at the conclusion of the season after the striker netted five times to help the club avoid relegation from League One. In total he played in a further 29 Football League games during his time at Meadow Lane.

Pleased to have now teamed up with the U’s, Spencer said: “When January 1st came about and I began looking for another club, it seemed right to join up with Shaun again at a good club that is clearly going places.

“I got on with him extremely well during my time at Notts County so it’s great to have the chance to work with him again here.

“My main aim now is to work hard and hopefully earn myself a place for next season, and of course grab some goals along the way.”

Commenting on the signing, U’s boss Shaun Derry added: “We’re delighted to bring jimmy into the club especially after the loss of Barry who has now undergone surgery on his knee injury.

“I know exactly what qualities Jimmy possesses having worked with him at Notts County and he’s provided a number of top class performances for me in the past.

“We look forward to working with him closely at Cambridge United.”
