MATCH PREVIEW: SHREWSBURY TOWN – CHECKATRADE TROPHY

MATCH PREVIEW: SHREWSBURY TOWN – CHECKATRADE TROPHY

Cambridge United begin their Checkatrade Trophy campaign tonight (K.O. 7:45pm) against League One outfit Shrewsbury Town at New Meadow.

Shaun Derry’s men are set to go toe-to-toe with the Shrews in Northern Group G for the first clash of the new look competition.

A number of changes are expected to be made by the United boss, although the rules of the competition dictate that five of the players who featured in Saturday’s League Two encounter against Luton Town must also feature this evening.

The U’s will be eager to produce a performance that will enable them to carry momentum back into Saturday’s League fixture with Mansfield Town at the One Call Stadium.

Meanwhile, the hosts approach this evening’s match with one win in their last five games in League and Cup. Saturday them fall to a narrow 3-2 defeat at the hands of Gillingham, so like the U’s they’ll be hungry for a victory that would bring life to their season.

The U’s are in front in the overall head to head record with the Shrews by 13 wins to eight, although the previous three meetings have ended all square.

Shaun Derry commented: “The game with Shrewsbury is one that we certainly want to win, as clearly we haven’t won enough games this season.

“Winning breeds confidence so that is more reason than any to want to get the victory on Tuesday night.

“We’ll expect the players to perform and respond in the correct manner following Saturday’s events at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Meanwhile the other fixture in Northern Group G sees Scunthorpe United take on Middlesbrough at Glanford Park.

Tickets for tonight’s game are available on the gate at New Meadow.
