UNITED BOSS AHEAD OF WYCOMBE CLASH
Following Saturday’s thrilling victory over Stevenage FC, Cambridge United Manager Richard Money says the group are eager to get their teeth stuck into more Football League action tonight.
The U’s travel down to the capital this evening to face Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park in Sky Bet League Two, kicking off at 7.45pm.
Although Money admits the scheduling of the fixture may be ideal with regards to the U’s training programme, for the group he feels the clash could not be better timed as they look to push on from last weekend’s exciting win.
The United Boss said: “I certainly think a quick turnaround in games is much easier when you have come off the pitch with three points on Saturday because you cannot wait for the next fixture. We are keen to get going again.
“Probably in terms of key players being available, the mid-week game perhaps isn’t what we would have wanted this week. If I’m honest we could have done with a week’s training.
“In terms of the group as a whole however, when you have won like we did on Saturday you are hungry for the next fixture to come as quickly as possible.”
Only Keith Keane and Josh Coulson have been ruled out of contention for tonight’s clash and although Money admits there is a process in which recovering players must go through, the presence of a portion of the squad returning to the training field does boost the mood within the group.
“Having players injury free is just the first stage, there is a training programme to go through, then they train back with the group, then play a game and finally achieve match fitness.
“If you are looking at what getting players back on the training field does for the group, then the first stage is an uplift in confidence.
“We didn’t intend on putting Ryan Donaldson on the bench Saturday, but he did a bit of work at lunch time on the day of the game and was still doing it when I arrived at the ground. Having asked him what he thought, we put him on the bench in case we needed him because he is important to us.
“Barry Corr also did some work, Jeff Hughes was back fit and on the bench, and I know myself from playing that you get a big lift when you the see the big players coming back.
“I hope that Saturday’s process which included the result and players making appearances in the squad can become key components in helping us build some momentum.”
