POST-STEVENAGE REACTION FROM RORY GAFFNEY
Having made his debut for the club this weekend in some fashion by assisting Harrison Dunk’s 97th minute winner against Stevenage FC at the Abbey Stadium, Rory Gaffney is already eyeing up his next opportunity for the U’s.
Richard Money opted to give the Irishman his first outing in an Amber and Black jersey following an injury plagued opening ten months to his Cambridge United career, and the 25-year old grasped his opportunity with both hands, first coming close to winning the game himself with a powerful volley before setting up Dunk for the winner in added time.
Reflecting on Saturday’s dramatic debut, Gaffney was pleased to have had such an important impact and told Cambridge-United.co.uk: “It was a good moment to finally come on and play a part in the goal.
“We created a lot of chances towards the end of the game and fortunately Harrison had a header at the back post to win it in the last minute.
“It was fantastic to run out on to the Abbey Stadium pitch for the first time and the fans gave me a great welcome. It has been a very long nine months since I signed so I’m really happy to have made my debut.
“It is always great for fans to show you their support and I really appreciate it.”
With a busy schedule of fixtures now facing the U’s with consecutive away fixtures against Wycombe Wanderers and York City in the next five days, Gaffney is keen to not to rest on his laurels and is now hungry to make further progress.
“We have two more tough games coming up this week. I’ll get the chance to work on my fitness and hopefully earn myself another place on the bench.
“Wycombe were extremely close to getting promoted last season and have started well again this year, so we know that will be a tough game playing away from home.
“You don’t have much time to sit on reflect on things because we have been straight back into work for Monday training and getting ready for the next fixture.
“We’ll take the confidence from Saturday’s performance and see how far that takes us down there, before we begin preparing for the game at the weekend away to York.
“We have looked defensively solid during the recent run of games thanks to the players at the back, so we’ll be looking to do a little more going forward and after that we shouldn’t have too many problems.”
